4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Remittances and the Problem of Control: A Field Experiment with Migrant Families in El Salvador and Washington, D.C.
While remittances have been shown to bring numerous benefits to households in developing countries, little is known about the extent to which remittance flows are reduced by the fact that migrants have no direct control over how remittances are spent by recipients. Migration creates changes in household structure that affect financial decision making, in large part by exacerbating information asymmetries. In particular, it is possible that migrants currently remit less than they would if they had better information on or more effective control over the uses to which remittances are put. This project investigates the importance of migrant control over the use of remittances via a field experiment with matched pairs of migrants living in the US and their origin households in El Salvador.
